Time to Declutter

woman overwhelmed and needs help to declutter the room

Have you been looking around your house and realize it’s time to declutter? We wanted to share a few tips with you on how to do just that!

Don’t Attack It All At Once

If it’s been awhile since you decluttered your house, chances are there is a lot of stuff you’ll need to go through. Instead of trying to attack it all in one weekend, plan it out. Pick a few weekends you can work on it and determine what rooms you’re going to tackle each weekend.

Determine What Can Go and What Will Stay

As you declutter room by room, get serious about what you want to keep and what can go. Be sure to have trash bags with you and as you determine something can go, if it can’t be donated or sold, trash it. Let’s narrow down a few things in each room that can probably go:

  • Bedrooms – Clothing that is too small, you haven’t worn in years, or ratty clothing that you’ll never wear again.
  • Bathroom – Unused hygiene products that you don’t plan on using within the next few years, or ever.
  • Office – Paperwork that isn’t necessary to keep.
  • Toy Room – Toys that your children don’t play with at all, broken toys, or toys that they have outgrown.
  • Living Room – Blankets…we know many people love blankets, but when there is an overabundance of them, are they necessary?
  • Kitchen – Food that is outdated or that won’t be eaten. Appliances that you have never used or are broken.

Organize

As you’re decluttering, you also want to organize. While you may think, I am going to go out and buy a bunch of baskets and bins before I start, that isn’t the smartest idea. If you don’t know what size or how many you need, you may end up spending too much money. Assess the rooms as you declutter, start the decluttering process, and determine what items you may need to get your room organized.
